UGG was founded in 1978 in California by Australian surfer Brian Smith, who moved to Southern California and sought to bring the comfort of Australian sheepskin boots to the U.S. market. Smith partnered briefly with Doug Jensen to form Ugg Imports Inc., selling 28 pairs of boots in their first season. After Jensen left in 1979, Smith continued the business, establishing UGG Holdings Inc. and trademarking the iconic Rams head logo with the words “Original UGG Boot UGG Australia” in 1985. The brand initially gained traction among surfers and in Southern California, with 80% of sales concentrated in Orange County by 1994
